Nigeria Starts Yams Exports to Strengthen Economy

Nigeria began to export yams to Europe and the United States, as part of moves to diversify its oil-dependent economy and earn much-needed foreign exchange.

Agriculture minister Audu Ogbeh flagged off the first consignment of the fibrous tuber from the port in the country’s economic capital, Lagos.

According to the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Nigeria accounts for 61 per cent of the world’s total yam output.

Yams, a staple grown across Nigeria, have gone up in price since last August when the country slipped into recession as a result of low global oil prices.

Nigeria relies on crude oil sales for 90 percent of foreign exchange earnings and 70 percent of government revenue. But the worldwide oil slump slashed revenues, weakened the naira, pushed up inflation and stalled investment prompting the government to look to the non-oil sector to stem the tide. The yam export is going to strengthen the country’s economy and help it gain an important place in worldwide trade.

Malaysia’s exports continue to grow at a robust pace

Malaysia’s exports continued to grow at a robust pace thanks to a strong demand for electrical products and electronics and higher commodity prices.

According to Alliance DBS Research chief economist Manokaran Mottain, the solid expansion in exports thus far indicates that Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the second quarter of this year would still remain strong.

Export growth of Malaysia remains solid mainly due to the strong performance of electrical and electronic exports and the continued rebound in the oil, gas, power and utility shipment, which contributed 7.9% and 2.1% to export growth, respectively. The double-digit export growth continues and has been the longest positive growth streak since January 2016.

Malaysia tends to establish strong partnerships in Asia and Europe and sign new trade agreements with international manufacturers and customers.

The UK exports record amount of food and drink in 2017

Surging sales of salmon helped the UK to export a record amount of  drinksfood and agricultural products in the first quarter of 2017. This information was presented by the Food and Drink Federation of the UK during the spring meeting.

According to the statistics, British food and drink exports as a whole grew by 8.3% year-on-year to £4.9bn - the largest first quarter figure on record.

The rise in the value of UK salmon sales is thanks in part to rising global demand for the fish, crustaceans and aquatic invertebrates, that has been hard to meet due to widespread lice infestations that have hampered production. That has led to higher prices for salmon across the board. The weakness of sterling has also helped to make the UK salmon less expensive than salmon from Chile and Norway.

British wine exports saw the greatest growth by volume, climbing 13.8%, while the value of the UK's cheese exports jumped 29.1% to £145.3m, thanks in part to a spike in sales to France.

The UK gained its place on the international market due to the following 10 products:

1. Whisky

2. Salmon

3. Chocolate

4. Cheese

5. Beer

6. Wine

7. Pork

8. Gin

9. Beef

10. Vegetables
