The UK exports record amount of food and drink in 2017

Surging sales of salmon helped the UK to export a record amount of  drinksfood and agricultural products in the first quarter of 2017. This information was presented by the Food and Drink Federation of the UK during the spring meeting.

According to the statistics, British food and drink exports as a whole grew by 8.3% year-on-year to £4.9bn - the largest first quarter figure on record.

The rise in the value of UK salmon sales is thanks in part to rising global demand for the fish, crustaceans and aquatic invertebrates, that has been hard to meet due to widespread lice infestations that have hampered production. That has led to higher prices for salmon across the board. The weakness of sterling has also helped to make the UK salmon less expensive than salmon from Chile and Norway.

British wine exports saw the greatest growth by volume, climbing 13.8%, while the value of the UK's cheese exports jumped 29.1% to £145.3m, thanks in part to a spike in sales to France.

The UK gained its place on the international market due to the following 10 products:

1. Whisky

2. Salmon

3. Chocolate

4. Cheese

5. Beer

6. Wine

7. Pork

8. Gin

9. Beef

10. Vegetables

Great opportunities for Vietnam’s fruits and vegetables export.

The global demand for fruits and vegetables is forecast to soar in the near future, affording Vietnam a chance to expand to choosy markets such as Japan, the Republic of Korea and the USA.

On the global market, fruits and vegetables account for over 59 percent of the total and are predicted to grow 2.88 percent for the 2016-2021 period.

The demand for certified products is growing. Over the past years, Vietnam has striven to improve the quality and hygiene of GAP certified products and issued regional codes for quality ones.

However, Vietnam still meets difficulties regarding fruits and vegetables preservation while connectivity between producers and businesses remains loose.

Nigel Smith, General Director of the Fine Fruit Asia, stated that fruits are gaining the upper hand in regional exports and Vietnam is one of the important partners in ASEAN.

He suggested diversifying fruits and vegetables to ease reliance on China, and developing partnership between businesses, farmers and the government at the regional and sectoral level so that Vietnam’s fruits and vegetables could compete well in international market.

The top exporters of fruits and vegetables are:

1. The USA

2. The Netherlands

3. France

4. China

5. Germany

Indian mangoes conquer Chinese market

India is planning to organize a "Mango Festival" in China and South Korea for the first time to boost exports of the "king of fruits". Though China had granted market access to Indian mangoes in 2004, it is yet to become "effective" and commercially meaningful.

In 2015-16, India’s exports of mangoes to China were worth just ₹24,000 out of India’s total mango exports of ₹317.1 crore.

To increase exports to China, the plan now is to hold a "Mango Festival" in Beijing to promote Indian mangoes and motivate sellers and manufacturers to establish new strong partnerships. In the same time, this event is going to help India gain a place on international market as one of the leading mangoes exporters, attracting new partners from Europe, North America and Latin America.
Other world's top exporters of mangoes are:

1. Mexico

2. Philippines

3. Pakistan

4. Brazil

5. Netherlands

6. Peru

7. Guatemala

8. France

9. Haiti

Indian tea companies look at increasing exports in 2017

With Kenyan coffee and tea prices shooting up by 25 per cent at $2.92 a kilo in last month's auction, the Indian tea industry can look ahead to increase its exports with a competitive edge, offering tea at an average price of $1.8 a kilo. However, the strong rupee and concern over production might play spoilsport.

Indian tea companies have projected low production volumes in Kenya which could keep their auction prices up. In case Indian tea production remains buoyant this year, then Indian tea will be able to make inroads into Kenyan export markets such as Russia, the UAE, the UK, the USA and Egypt.

Along with Kenya and India, the top tea exporters are:

1. China

2. Sri Lanka

3. Vietnam

4. Turkey

5. Iran
