Over the past two decades,Peru has emerged as a significant fruit and vegetable exporter.
The United
States is one of its most important markets. This rise in exports was
driven by advantages in climate, low production costs, and
preferential trading arrangements with major countries.
Asparagus was the first, and remains the
most prominent, example of Peru’s success as a major exporter of
fruit and vegetable products.
20 years ago Peruvian asparagus would not
be found in the shops whilst now Peru is the largest exporter of
fresh asparagus and is second only to China in its exports of
processed asparagus.
